Further info: The towers were originally built with a primarily defensive purpose, but over time they have served various functions. Between the 16th and 19th centuries, they were used as a prison for nobles and have also functioned as a triumphal arch. Today, the Serranos Towers are one of Valencia's main historical attractions and an iconic symbol of the city. It is no coincidence that this is the place from which the Fallera Mayor (the Queen of the Fallas) each year on the last Sunday in February, welcomes Valencians and visitors, marking the beginning of the Fallas festivities.
Near these towers, at the rear, stood the Bab Al Qantara gate (the bridge gate) of the Islamic wall.
