The very best
of Nerja
Nerja is the most famous resort in the Axarquía, a region also known as Costa del Sol Oriental. Facing where the sun rises, the ‘xarq’ in Arabic, it is situated in the East of Málaga and has been called A-xarqiyya since Al Andalus times. Nerja was also the Islamic Narixa and its nice white streets still preserve the Arab-Andalusí essence. Welcome to the less beaten track of Costa del Sol.
Nerja Travel Tips
CHOOSE YOUR DATES
In Costal del Sol, east of Malaga is less popular than west, but no less appealing. On the east (called Costa del Sol Oriental), the most famous resort is Nerja. However, during the peak season (July and August), it is not as crowded as other destinations in the Western zone (such as Marbella, Torremolinos or Benalmádena) and still preserves part of its original spirit. It boasts a mild average temperature throughout the year.
HOW TO GET
Nerja is located 70 km away from Malaga-Costa del Sol International Airport, with direct connections to the main Spanish and European cities. Additionally, the Malaga-María Zambrano Train Station operates fast trains to Madrid, Barcelona and other capital cities. The price of a taxi from the airport or Malaga train station to Nerja is approx € 60-65.
FROM THERE
The city is situated at the eastern tip of the Costa del Sol, 50 km from the city of Malaga and within an hour and a half’s drive from Granada and the ski resort of the Sierra Nevada. From here you can explore other towns of the Axarquía, with an interesting Andalusian, Mudejar and ‘Morisco’ legacy.
