Sagrada Família

Carrer de la Marina, 41, Exaimple, 08013, Barcelona, Spain

Rating: 4,8

(277.000 reviews)
This basilica is Antoni Gaudí's masterpiece and the most emblematic building in Barcelona, despite being unfinished. The Sagrada Família is rich in symbolism: its interior resembles a forest, with columns representing tree trunks and vaults symbolizing leaves. At the highest point, a golden Venetian glass mosaic evokes God. Outside, the life of Jesus (Isa) and concepts like faith, hope, and charity are depicted. The basilica is expected to be completed in 2026, the centenary of Antoni Gaudí's death.

Further info: The basilica is expected to be completed in 2026, 100 years after Gaudí's death. By that time, he had only completed one of the 18 planned towers, the crypt, the apse walls, and one of the three facades, the Nativity Façade, which is considered the artistic pinnacle of the building. The ongoing construction follows part of his original plans, although some were lost or destroyed, leading to controversies regarding their interpretation, the materials used, and the overall direction of the project. As an expiatory temple, it is funded exclusively through donations from believers. UNESCO declared the Sagrada Familia a World Heritage site in 2005.
