Alminar of San Juan

San Juan de Los Reyes, 18010, Granada, Spain

Rating: 4,5

(300 reviews)
This minaret, along with the Alminar (minarete) de San José, is one of the few surviving remnants of the 37 mosques that once stood in the Andalusí Albaicín quarter—the historic Muslim quarter that gave birth to Granada and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was originally part of the so-called Mezquita de los Conversos (Masyid al-Ta'ibin) and was constructed in the 13th century during the Almohad period. Unsurprisingly, it bears a strong resemblance to other Almohad minarets, such as the Giralda in Seville and the Koutoubia in Marrakech. Like the Giralda, it features no internal stairs—only a ramp. It now belongs to the Church of San Juan de los Reyes.
