La Lonja – The Silk Exchange

Lonja, 2, 46001, València, Spain

+ 14

This magnificent edifice, Unesco World Heritage Site, was built in the 15th century, when Valencia was one of the most flourishing cities in the Mediterranean. La Lonja served as the silk and commodity exchange. By the way, the silk arrived in Spain from the East during Al-Andalus; the Arabs introduced silkworms and mulberry trees, their food source. The civil Gothic style of La Lonja will captivate you.

Points of interest: The Columnario, also known as the Sala de Contratación, is the central part of La Lonja, where commercial exchanges took place. It features a layout of three longitudinal and five transversal aisles, with eight columns that rise to support the vaulted ceiling. Standing at 17.40 meters tall, these columns convey an impressive sense of grandeur and balance. The combination of the columns and the elegant arches resembles palm trees, giving you the feeling of being in a palm grove. Without a doubt, we're in the Mediterranean! It's a fantastic spot for capturing stunning photos.

Our tip: La Lonja de la Seda is located right across from the Mercat Central (Central Market), which is undoubtedly one of the must-see attractions in Valencia. So, it might be a good idea to plan your visit to combine both sites.
