La Madraza

Calle Oficios, 14, 18001 Granada, Spain

Rating: 4,4

(3.096 reviews)
From the outside, it appears as a baroque palace, but inside lies an Alhambra-style treasure. Commissioned by Yusuf I in 1349, this historic building was Granada's first university—a madrasa that marked the beginning of higher education in the city. After the fall of Granada, King Boabdil and the Catholic Monarchs agreed to maintain its educational function, though that promise was short-lived. Today, the building houses a Contemporary Cultural Center belonging to the University of Granada. Inside you can admire a striking octagonal dome and beautifully preserved mihrab.
