Old & New Mudejar

Alcalá 62 and 237, 28009 and 28028 Madrid, Spain

Rating: 4,5

(37.000 reviews)
The Muslims who continued living in territories formerly part of Al Andalus after they came under Christian rule are known as 'Mudejares.' Many Mudejar masters and architects built new structures that retained some Islamic characteristics, giving rise to a new style known as the Mudejar style. In Madrid, this is exemplified by Lujanes Palace—the city's oldest civil building—as well as a few churches. Later, at the beginning of the 20th century, architects were once again inspired by the Mudejar style, with iconic buildings such as Las Ventas Bullring or Casa Árabe reflecting this tradition.
