‘Patios’ Festival

San Basilio, 44, 14004 Cordoba, Spain

Rating: 4,6

The 'patios' or courtyards are one of the hallmarks of the Andalusian houses and, very particularly, of the Cordoba houses. They are a legacy of Al Andalus. In May, the patio-houses open their doors in Cordoba to offer visitors an amazing floral spectacle that is the result of the community contribution during a whole year. This unique festival was declared intangible heritage of Humanity in 2012. The Patios Festival takes place during the first two weeks of May. However, many of the flower-filled  courtyards can be visited year-round.

Where: Calle San Basilio street is one of the best areas to visit the patios in Córdoba, as it features several that are open to the public year-round. Among them is one of the most famous patios, located at number 44 on this street, which is home to the "Asociación de Amigos de los Patios Cordobeses," a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of the patios and the promotion of the Festival. The image of the patio at San Basilio 44 is one of the most iconic and recognized in the city; in fact, it serves as the main photo in our image gallery.
You will also find patios open to the public at numbers 14, 17, 20, and 40 on San Basilio street, as well as at Calle Martín de la Roa 2 and Calle Maese Luis 22.
Be sure to check their hours, as each one has different visiting times.
Palacio de Viana: Located in Plaza de Don Gome, this majestic palace-museum features twelve patios and a historic garden. This type of patio is less common than those typically found in the homes of ordinary people, but it is equally beautiful and intriguing.

When:
The patios of Córdoba reach their peak splendor each year during the first half of May, when the Festival of the Cordoban Patios (a UNESCO World Heritage event) is celebrated. However, many of Córdoba’s patios can be visited year-round. In fact, it could be said that outside the Festival dates is the best time to explore them, as they are less crowded. Without a doubt, visiting outside the Festival makes for an easier and more enjoyable experience.

How to visit: You can visit them on your own by checking which ones are open to the public and their visiting days and hours. You can also sign up for one of the guided tours organized by different agencies. Check here for the ones we recommend and reserve your spot.

Price: All the patios we recommend above are free to visit, except for those at the Palacio de Viana: Adults, full visit: €12; patios only: €8. Children up to 10 years old can enter for free. On Wednesdays from 14:00 to 17:00, visiting the patios is free.
