Mijas is the capital of the donkey-taxi. The charming 'burritos' are an emblem of the city and one of its most appreciated attractions. Even a bronze sculpture pays homage to them. It was in the 60's when the "Mijeños", who used them to haul stones, discovered the interest these animals aroused in the tourists and turned them into improvised "taxis" to walk the whitewashed streets. Today there are 60 licensed donkeys.
